Project Management 101: An Introduction for the Accidental Project Manager
with Dan Montagna, PMP, PMI-ACP

This foundational presentation offers a comprehensive introduction to formal project management concepts, practices, and essential tools. It's designed for both aspiring and early-career Project Managers, as well as anyone in a role that requires managing projects on a day-to-day basis, regardless of title. The session provides practical insights and experiential guidance for effective project management, covering both traditional Waterfall and modern Agile methodologies. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of what it takes to define, plan, execute, and successfully close projects.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Define Core Concepts: Understand what constitutes a "project," "project management," and the multifaceted role of a "project manager" in various organizational structures (functional, projectized, matrixed).
  • Overview of Project Management Institute (PMI) & PMBOK: Learn about PMI as a professional organization, the significance of the PMBOK Guide and how it informs best practices.
  • Master Essential Tools & Methodologies: Explore practical tools for scope definition, status reporting (budget, variances, issues, risks), and timeline management (Gantt charts). The presentation will also introduce and contrast Waterfall and Agile approaches, demonstrating simple Waterfall/Agile workflows.
  • Identify & Overcome Project Challenges: Gain insight into common reasons projects fail and learn critical success factors, including the importance of a well-defined project management plan, clear communication, risk assessment, and managing the "Iron Triangle" (scope, schedule, budget).
  • Earn Professional Development Units (PDUs): This session provides valuable content that aligns with PMI's professional development requirements, making it suitable for PMPs seeking to maintain their certification.
