Managing Sideways
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

Even if you have direct reports to execute projects for you, you still have to work with peers – the people you are performing the project for, groups from other areas who perform necessary work, etc.

PMI Infinity states that:

Effective sideways management ultimately contributes to improving interpersonal collaboration, breaking silos, and driving team and project success. By fostering adaptive influence and meaningful connections, you can enhance project outcomes and ensure cohesive teamwork across functions.

It lists ten considerations for managing sideways:

  1. Develop Mutual Respect and Trust
  2. Leverage Influence without Authority
  3. Communicate Effectively
  4. Negotiate and Collaborate
  5. Clarify Roles and Responsibilities
  6. Resolve Conflict Positively
  7. Align on Shared Goals
  8. Acknowledge Contributions
  9. Ask for Feedback
  10.  Be Politically Savvy

How many of these methods do you use? What other methods, e.g., escalating, do you use? What do you do when a colleague doesn’t cooperate?

Bring your knowledge, skills, experience, or just plain curiosity to our discussion of Managing Sideways.
