How to Prioritize Projects in a Decentralized Environment
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

Many organizations have project steering committees that prioritize major projects. Agile organizations have product owners that groom backlogs. Even if you have a steering committee, there are still smaller projects that don’t get their attention but still need to be done. How do you decide which projects should be executed and which could wait?

PMI Infinity recommends:

  • Empower Key Stakeholders and Teams including project sponsors, business leaders
  • Facilitate Prioritization with Business Analysts
  • Rely on the Project Team. The members should have a shared vision of the organization’s goals.
  • Use Governance Frameworks such as Rated Scoring, MoSCoW, and RACI charts
  • Align prioritization with the organization’s Strategic Goals
  • Ensure Clear Communication and Documentation
  • Iterate Regularly

How many of these techniques do you use? Do you use any other methods?
