It Worked in the Demo: Why AI Projects Fail and How CMPAI Can Fix the Delivery Model
with Dan Montagna

In the third installment of the PM101 series, this session introduces PMI’s Cognitive Project Management in AI (CPMAI)—a vendor-neutral, data-centric, AI-specific, iterative methodology designed to help teams deliver AI work more reliably than “traditional app project” approaches. We’ll unpack why so many AI initiatives stall before production, then walk through CPMAI’s six phases (Business Understanding through Model Operationalization).

The content is for everyone—PMs, program leaders, and partner functions (HR, Finance, Tech, IT, Marketing, Growth)—because AI delivery fails as much from unclear outcomes, weak data readiness, and low trust as it does from algorithms.

You’ll leave with a practical mental model for AI project execution, a shared vocabulary, and ideas on how to contribute project success from your seat in an organization: propose valuable business use cases, strengthen AI literacy, and help establish a repeatable AI delivery method for AI/ML projects.
