Project Management and the Responsible Use of AI

AI is everywhere these days. Fortune 500 companies tout their use of AI. Employers want employees with AI skills. Many PMI events address AI.

There are those who are horrified by AI. They're afraid that students will graduate college without learning things because AI does the work for them. Others believe AI will destroy or take over the world.

Project managers need to use AI responsibly – especially because AI is here to stay. PMI Infinity, a responsible AI engine, recommends that AI be used to automate routine tasks such as summarizing meetings, drafting routine content, or flagging patterns. As tasks become more complex, people should review and refine what AI produces.
 
“The main controls are straightforward. Use AI for a clear business purpose tied to project value. Protect sensitive data and comply with privacy, security, and legal requirements. Test for bias and unfair outcomes, especially when AI affects stakeholders, prioritization, staffing, or risk decisions. Validate outputs for accuracy, relevance, and completeness instead of treating them as facts. Be transparent about where AI is being used and how its outputs are checked. Build governance into the project from the start rather than treating ethics as a final review step.”
