Principles of Project Management: Embrace Adaptability and Resiliency
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

No project runs completely to plan. Schedules slip, requirements change, assumptions prove to be false. The PMBOK recommends incorporating “adaptablitiy and resiliency into the organization’s and project team’s approaches to help the project accommodate change, recover from setbacks, and advance the work of the project.”

“Adaptability is ability to respond to changing conditions.”

“Resiliency is the ability to absorb impacts and to recover quickly from a setback or failure.”

“A focus on outcomes rather than outputs facilitates adaptability.”

How do you develop adaptability and resiliency in your project teams? How do you respond and encourage others to respond when your project encounters obstacles?

Focusing on “outcomes rather than outputs” means doing what is best for the organization rather than what is in the project charter or original plan. What do you do to get the sponsor or customer’s approval? How do you manage scope creep? What do you do when a project has an immovable deadline?

Bring your insights, opinions, war stories, suggestions for action, or just plain curiosity about embracing adaptability and resiliency.
