Principles of Project Management: Enable Change to Achieve the Envisioned Future State
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

There is a change management profession. There are even organizations that set standards and offer certifications in Change Management. Projects by their very nature bring change to organizations. The PMBOK states that “Project managers are uniquely poised to keep an organization prepared for changes.”

Not all stakeholders adapt well to change. The reasons for their resistance can be due to the organizational culture, an individual’s personality, or a reaction to too much change occurring too quickly. Even if stakeholders approve of the change they may have difficulty adapting.

It is always better to use motivational strategies rather than forceful ones to implement change. The reason for the changes the project is introducing should be communicated clearly.

How do you communicate and implement changes in your projects? How do you handle resistance to change? How do you ensure that the changes are implemented successfully and that people don’t revert to old ways of doing things?

Bring your insights, opinions, war stories, suggestions for action, or just plain curiosity about enabling change to achieve the envisioned future state.
