Skills of Project Managers: Negotiation Skills
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

Negotiation is a discussion among multiple parties to reach an agreement about differing needs or opinions. We negotiate whenever we implement projects: we negotiate scope, timelines, access to resources, etc.

Good negotiations help us to:

  • Gain better control in business situations
  • Help you understand your own interests, the other party’s interest, and the differences between them
  • Help reach a solution beneficial to both parties.

In short, successful negotiations help fuel project success.

How do negotiations proceed at your organization? Do you negotiate differently with vendors or customers than you do with internal people? Are your negotiations win-win or win-lose? How do you prepare for negotiations? What do you do when you can’t reach an agreement?

Bring your insights, opinions, war (and peace) stories, suggestions for action, or just plain curiosity about Negotiation Skills.
