Transferring Risk
facilitated by Joseph Carfagno, PMP

Buying insurance may be the most common example of transferring risk. Insurance companies transfer risk by buying reinsurance.

Project managers may also buy insurance for their projects. In that case a third party is responsible for paying any fines incurred by your organization. More common forms of transferring risk include outsourcing the development of parts of the project in which team members lack expertise. Hosting systems in the cloud is another form of risk transfer: the hosting company ensures the system will run reliably and that your data is secure. Negotiating fixed price contracts ensures there is a cap for a portion of the project’s expenses.

Organizations pay a premium to transfer risk. Whoever takes on the risk needs to make money too. You need to make sure that the organization you are transferring risk to charges reasonable rates and is capable of performing their portion of the project. Risk transfer is not risk elimination. Your organization is still liable.

What is your organization’s approach to risk transfer? How do you evaluate vendors? What do you do when the vendor doesn’t meet its responsibilities?

Bring your insights, opinions, war stories, suggestions for action, or just plain curiosity about Transferring Risk.
